Smell and smell perception: Recent advances & perspectives

Presentation summary: “The temporal and spatial aspects of olfactory perception are impoverished compared to the perception of space and time through vision or audition. Furthermore, the perceptual qualities (smells) that are arranged in space and time seem to resist being organized in an orderly system according to similarity in the same way tones and colors are. The structure of olfactory appearances therefore cannot be described using the framework developed in other modalities. Developing a framework that reflects actual olfactory experience rather than the semantic representation of the experience will be a crucial step in enabling the reproduction of natural olfactory scenes.”
