Digital Olfaction Meets VR Meditation – Demonstration at DOS World Congress 2024

Mei Kei Lai from Macao Polytechnic University, China, will present an immersive demonstration at the upcoming Digital Olfaction Society World Congress: “VR Meditation with Digital Incense for Youth Education”.

This innovative project, TranScent, redefines meditation through virtual reality (VR) enhanced by digital incense. By promoting relaxation and mindfulness, this approach supports youth wellbeing in a completely new way. Unlike traditional oil-based olfactory VR systems, TranScent incorporates an incense hub connected to VR, offering a smooth and lightweight experience ideal for meditation practices.

The demonstration will feature key aspects of their research:

  • Sensory Ethnography: Engaging participants in community exploration to deepen their sensory awareness.
  • VR Meditation with Digital Incense: An innovative system allowing users to select and experience incense aromas synchronously with the VR environment.
  • Art Installation: Transforming the experience into a public showcase, encouraging dialogues on olfactory art and digital therapy.

The TranScent project is an important step forward in combining digital olfaction with VR to address youth stress, providing both therapeutic and educational opportunities.
