Wearable Olfactory Display for Olfactory VR

Can Virtual Reality Reproduce Smell in Real Time?

Professor Takamichi Nakamoto Brings Wearable Olfactory Technology to Digital Olfaction 2026.

Tokyo, Japan | December 9–10, 2026

What if virtual reality could let us smell the places we visit, not just see and hear them?

At the 9th World Congress of the Digital Olfaction Society, Professor Takamichi Nakamoto, Institute of Integrated Research, Institute of Science Tokyo, will present: Wearable olfactory display for olfactory VR

One of the major challenges in digital olfaction is reproducing scents precisely, changing them in real time and integrating the technology into compact wearable devices.

Professor Nakamoto and his research team have developed olfactory displays capable of controlling scent concentration, blending multiple ingredients and dynamically changing odor compositions.

Their research has progressed from early two-channel systems to designs incorporating up to 12 channels.

A study published in IEEE Sensors Journal in 2026 also describes an eight-channel wearable olfactory display designed for immersive virtual reality.

Beyond entertainment, what can olfactory VR achieve?

Professor Nakamoto will explore applications ranging from virtual travel experiences to disaster-response training, as well as methods for quantitatively evaluating the effects of smell-enhanced virtual reality.
